DESCRIPTION:
The Idaho Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired is seeking a full-time Instructor for the Blind, Sr. in their Boise office. The Sr. Instructor will empower visually impaired individuals by providing specialized training in assistive technology, activities of daily living, Braille literacy, travel methods, and communications; assist clients in their adjustment to vision loss; perform related work as needed.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Instruction:
Typical responsibilities may include: determine clients’ goals and training needs; assess clients’ capabilities and appropriate instructional methods; recommend low vision aids and train in their use, instruct clients in alternative techniques to blindness, assistive technology, travel methods, and Braille literacy; prepare and facilitate instructional materials; evaluate clients progress and modify training as needed.
Communication:
Typical responsibilities may include: collaborate with clients in addressing their individual challenges and needs; discuss with clients their adjustment to vision loss while emphasizing self-reliance, independence and alternative living skills; advise clients on independent living and/or vocational goals; coordinate vocational goals with ICBVI Counselors; communicate with other ICBVI staff, clients, other professionals and the public.
Public Relations:
Typical responsibilities may include: conduct presentations and participate in outreach efforts; answer questions regarding blindness and agency services; work with local employers and provide business engagement services.
Test administration:
Typical responsibilities may include administer and interpret aptitude and special interest tests; provide recommendations to staff and clients based on test results.
Case management:
Typical responsibilities may include: conduct initial interview and complete applications; identify, coordinate and integrate ICBVI services; uphold ethical standards, respecting confidentiality and maintaining professionalism; obtain diagnostic and other documentation as needed; case documentation of all interactions and relevant information for services.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Good knowledge of:
- Instructional methods;
- Issues associated with blindness and vision loss;
- Community resources available for the blind and visually impaired.
Experience:
- Developing and implementing instruction and training programs;
- Assessing individuals' learning capabilities and evaluating their progress;
- Making oral presentations to groups.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
Travel approximately 50% to 90% of work time in an assigned area of the state. Overnight travel is rarely required.
The applicant that is hired will participate in learning alternative techniques to blindness as determined by their supervisor and ICBVI staff.
